Currencies: US Dollar Index Speculators trimmed their bearish bets for 2nd week

Large currency speculators cut back on their bearish net positions in the US Dollar Index futures markets this week, according to the latest Commitment of Traders (COT) data released by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) on Friday.

US Dollar Index speculators reduced their net bearish bets this week for the second straight week and for the third time in the past four weeks.

Overall, the major currencies that saw improving speculator positions this week were the US dollar index (988 weekly change in contracts), euro (67 contracts), British pound sterling (6,418 contracts), Canadian dollar (9,651 contracts) and the Mexican peso (2,404 contracts).

The currencies whose speculative bets declined this week were the Japanese yen (-7,862 weekly change in contracts), Swiss franc (-70 contracts),  Australian dollar (-1,879 contracts) and the New Zealand dollar (-2,066 contracts).

WTI Crude Oil Speculators sharply dropped their bullish bets for 5th straight week

The large speculator contracts of WTI crude futures totaled a net position of 449,366 contracts, according to the latest data this week. This was a change of -41,549 contracts from the previous weekly total.

 


10-Year Note Speculators pushed their bets higher into new bullish standing

Large speculator contracts of the 10-Year Bond futures totaled a net position of 9,507 contracts, according to the latest data this week. This was a change of 22,984 contracts from the previous weekly total.

 


Gold Speculators Upped Their Bullish Bets for 2nd Week to 5-Week High

Large precious metals speculator contracts of the Gold futures totaled a net position of 236,473 contracts, according to the latest data this week. This was a change of 5,677 contracts from the previous weekly total.

 


Copper Speculators Raised Their Bullish Bets for 4th Week to 116-Week High

Metals speculator contracts of the copper futures totaled a net position of 55,750 contracts, according to the latest data this week. This was a change of 2,634 contracts from the previous weekly total.

The Commitment of Traders report data is published in raw form every Friday by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and shows the futures positions of market participants as of the previous Tuesday (data is reported 3 days behind).
